About Theo Paredes, Ph.D.

Theo Paredes, Ph.D., is the founding Director of Poqen Kanchay Foundation in Cusco, Peru. Growing up in Cusco, he has always had contact with the native people of Peru worked with them to maintain sustainable communities. At 11 years old, he was initiated into the traditional healing practices of his people and has continued to work with shamanic practices for over thirty years, particularly in the use of ceremony and the practices of managing energy to make living an art. He has survived two lightning strikes, which in the Andean tradition, is considered a “call by nature” to train and practice in the Earth traditions. He combines his knowledge of the myths and the life view of the societies, which culminated with the Incas, together with Andean energy concepts, to form the perspective of a different kind of society.

Dr. Paredes has studied and practiced anthropology in Europe and the Americas. For the past fifteen years he has worked within the Peruvian government as Director of National Projects and the Governor of the Cusco Department and as a consultant for IFAD (Internal Foundation for Agricultural Development). Dr. Paredes is fluent in Spanish, English, and we think Quechua and possibly other languages.  Craig Hartel of Minnesota, who has studied with Dr Paredes for 12 years, will assist Dr. Paredes though out the retreat.

About Craig Hartel

Craig Hartel has always been a spiritual seeker.  For as long as he can remember he read any books he could get his hands that delved into mysticism and the spiritual realm.  In his forties he joined a local spirituality group that was on a similar path. He studied  the healing methods of the Indian Medicine women in Easter Island, explored the vortexes in Sedona numerous times and then went to Canyon de Chelly with the Four Winds group.  Eventually he was lead to Peru where he met Andean Shaman don Theo Paredes, Ph.D.  He began studying with him learning the traditional healing practices of the Andean indigenous peoples.  This relationship turned into a 12-year apprenticeship where he was taught shamanic practices particularly the use of sacred plants and practices of managing energy.  Don Theo  took him to many archaeological sites in the Incan empire where he taught him the purpose for which these energetic centers were created and how it has been passed down from the ancient masters.

In between all of these adventures, he completed the healing program at the Center for Wholeness in Minneapolis and was ordained a healing minister in 2000.  He has been practicing healing for over 10 years and has a private studio in his home where he lives with his wife of 35 years and daughter.
