Everything must go through a cycle of creation and destruction.  After Summer there must be Winter. The purpose is to seek help from the Goddess to get rid of evil forces outside and inside us. Kali helps us destroy the ego so we can connect to the love of the universe. Some say that we are in the age of Kali Yuga\, the last of the four stages that the world.
